Working dogs is the largest section within Dogs, with more than thirty prints in it, and it is organised around what a breed was bred to do rather than what it looks like.
That means the gundogs and the herding breeds mostly, plus the guarding and draught breeds. Labradors, golden retrievers and flat-coated retrievers sit alongside collies, dobermans, German shepherds, rottweilers and the rest. If you are shopping for someone whose dog actually works - a beating day, a farm, a trial - this is a more useful way in than the alphabetical breed pages.
Mike Sibley accounts for a good share of it. He has been a professional artist for over twenty years, works in graphite, and often spends more than two hundred hours on a single drawing. Working breeds suit him particularly well, because what he is best at is expression and attention: the moment a collie locks on to something, the set of a retriever's head when it is waiting to be sent.
Brian Hupfield is the other name you will see repeatedly here, with a looser and warmer line than Sibley's, and there are pieces by Ken Messom, Michael O'Brien and others alongside them.
Almost everything in this section is a giclee print - archival inks on archival paper, so nothing fades or yellows on a wall over a decade. Most are nineteen pounds ninety-nine. Sizes vary a little by artist, but most sit around 41 x 28 cm before mounting, which fits a standard off-the-shelf frame without a trip to a framer.
