Warwickshire: Prints of Stratford-upon-Avon and Warwick

Warwickshire is one of the larger English sections, with sixteen prints of Shakespeare country, Warwick and the towns to the north.

Stratford-upon-Avon has the most. Martin Goode painted Shakespeare's Birthplace in two views, Anne Hathaway's Cottage twice, Hall's Croft, Mary Arden's House and Holy Trinity Church, where Shakespeare is buried. Welford-on-Avon, a few miles downriver, is here too.

Warwick has the castle and the River Avon, the East Gate and the Lord Leycester Hospital, and Leamington Spa's town hall is next door. Further north, Nuneaton gets three: the Coton Arches, the Market Place and the Town Hall. Martin Goode was known for his attention to detail and his carefully constructed compositions, and his prints are small - around 15 x 10 cm or 20 x 13 cm before mounting - so they suit a standard off-the-shelf mount and frame.

John Bird's print of the Lord Leycester at Warwick, the medieval guild buildings on the High Street, is the largest piece in the section. John Bird is a Doncaster-born artist who has painted for English Heritage, the National Trust and the English Tourist Board. His prints are around 41 x 28 cm and each one is signed and titled by hand.

The Goode prints are eleven to fourteen pounds and the John Bird is eighteen. The West Midlands, Oxfordshire and Worcestershire each have their own sections. If the place you are looking for is not here, ask us - we are a small family business and we are happy to check.
