The Brontes: Haworth Prints by John Bird

Two prints of Haworth by John Bird, the West Yorkshire village where The Brontes lived and wrote. Bronte's Haworth Parsonage in Winter shows the house itself under snow, now the Bronte Parsonage Museum; Haworth takes in the steep cobbled main street and the moorland weather above it. Both are signed and titled by the artist, eighteen pounds each, printed on archival paper and never displayed. They hang well as a pair.

The Brontes category is small and specific: two prints by John Bird, both of Haworth, the West Yorkshire village where the family lived and wrote.
Bronte's Haworth Parsonage in Winter is the better known of the pair. The parsonage is the Georgian house at the top of the village, beside the church and its graveyard, where Patrick Bronte was perpetual curate and where Charlotte, Emily and Anne wrote Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, largely in the same downstairs room. Bird paints it under snow, which is the state most readers imagine it in anyway. It is now the Bronte Parsonage Museum, and anyone who has climbed the hill to visit will recognise the view at once.
Haworth is the companion piece and takes in the village itself: the steep cobbled main street the family walked down, the stone terraces, the moorland weather sitting over the top of it. Between them the two prints give you the house and the place it stands in, which is the point. The Brontes are inseparable from that landscape - the moors above Haworth are not scenery in the novels so much as a character in them.
John Bird is a Doncaster artist with an unusual history. He spent around thirty years in professional football, playing for Doncaster Rovers, Preston North End, Newcastle United and Hartlepool and later managing at Hartlepool, York City and Halifax Town, painting throughout. He now works full time as an artist. English Heritage, the National Trust and the English Tourist Board have all commissioned him, and in 2006 he was one of twenty-five artists chosen for the Drawings from Turner project, shown at Tate Britain.
Every John Bird print is signed and titled by John personally, which is unusual at this price. Both prints here are eighteen pounds. They are printed on archival paper with fade-resistant inks, have never been hung or displayed, and come to you clean and unmarked in their original wrapping. Sizes fit a standard off-the-shelf frame and mount.
They make a natural gift for a reader, and they hold up better than most literary merchandise because they are pictures of a real place rather than illustrations of a book. If you are after other John Bird subjects, there are more of his prints in the Places collection.
