Kent has five Martin Goode watercolours, mostly from the south of the county between the Channel coast and the Weald.
Dover Castle is the big one, the great fortress above the white cliffs that has guarded the shortest crossing to France for nearly a thousand years. Folkestone is along the coast from it. Inland there are Scotney Castle, the moated ruin in its romantic garden; Six Bells Lane in Tenterden; and Smallhythe Place, the timber-framed house near Tenterden that was once the home of the actress Ellen Terry.
Martin Goode was known for his attention to detail and his carefully constructed compositions, and his prints are small - around 15 x 10 cm or 20 x 13 cm before mounting - so they suit a standard off-the-shelf mount and frame.
Kent is one of the more affordable sections: two of the prints are seven pounds fifty and the rest are eleven pounds. Sussex and Surrey border the county to the west, and London is up the road.
