Places: Prints of British and Irish Landmarks
Our Places collection runs to more than two hundred prints of towns, castles, cathedrals, harbours and village streets across England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland, with a handful from France and the USA. Martin Goode's watercolours make up the bulk of it, alongside signed work by John Bird and prints by Philip and Glyn Martin. Most cost between eleven and eighteen pounds, and if your town is in here, it is usually the only print of it we hold.

Most people arrive in this category with one place already in mind: a town they grew up in, a church they were married in, a harbour they spent every childhood summer near. Places holds more than two hundred prints, so it is worth searching for your own before you settle in to browse.
Martin Goode is the artist behind most of them. His watercolours cover an extraordinary spread of British and Irish subjects - Dover Castle, the East Gate at Warwick, Cheddar Gorge, the Old Mill at Cobham, Market Square in Mansfield, Airton Green in the Pennines, Legananny Dolmen in County Down, the Custom House in Dublin, Muckross House at Killarney, the quay at New Ross. He was known for his attention to detail and his carefully constructed compositions, and the work holds up close to as well as it does from across a room.
John Bird supplies a different kind of picture. A Doncaster man who spent thirty years in professional football before turning to painting full time, he has worked for English Heritage, the National Trust and the English Tourist Board. His subjects are the grand ones: Audley End House, Selby Abbey, the Lord Leycester at Warwick, St Peter's Church at Old Edlington, winter in the Brecon Beacons. Every John Bird print is signed and titled by hand.
Philip and Glyn Martin account for another thirty or so pieces, among them Pulteney Bridge at Bath, the medieval houses of Bristol and Stokesay Castle in Shropshire.
The collection is divided by country. England is the largest section by a distance, with more than two hundred prints sorted by county, followed by Ireland and N.Ireland, then small groups from Scotland, Wales, France and the USA. If you are not certain which section a place falls under, the search box is quicker than the filters.
Prices start at eleven pounds and most sit between eleven and eighteen. The John Bird prints are typically eighteen. Sizes vary by artist, but many are around 41 x 28 cm before mounting, which fits a standard off-the-shelf frame.
These are reproductions of paintings and drawings rather than photographs, and that is rather the point. A photograph of Dover Castle is easy to come by. A watercolour of it, painted by someone who sat in front of it, is a different thing to live with, and it tends to survive a change of decor better.
If you cannot find the place you are looking for, it is worth asking. We are a small family business, we have been selling prints for over twenty years, and we are happy to go and check.
